Purpose
Provide security services under the Private Security Industry Regulations Act 56 of 2001 to protect Dis-Chem’s assets, property and staff by keeping the site safe, spotting criminal activity or disorder, and investigating disturbances.
Essential Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) or Senior Certificate
- PSIRA Grade C accreditation
- At least 3 years of retail-environment experience (e.g. malls, warehouses)
Key Duties
- Vigilance and patrols: Stay alert, conduct random patrols, stay visible as a deterrent, and apprehend or remove offenders within legal limits and Dis-Chem procedures.
- Access control: Monitor and record entry of vehicles and pedestrians, allowing only authorised people in. Search staff, suppliers and merchandisers, and carry out daily personnel and vehicle searches.
- Admin and record-keeping: Complete registers and occurrence books, take accurate notes, cancel staff purchases and declared goods, and supervise refuse removal.
- Reporting: Report suspicious behaviour by staff, customers or suppliers, giving management a verbal report and then a detailed written one. Contact police or emergency services when needed.
- Opening and closing: Be present and observant at both, lock all doors and windows, and make sure taps are off.
- Surveillance: Monitor alarms and CCTV, and patrol the grounds and watch cameras when working nights or alone.
- Emergencies: Respond quickly to crises, call police immediately in armed robberies or assaults, assist first responders, and keep order during evacuations (preventing stampedes and illegal entry).
- Customer service and general: Be courteous and approachable, give safety advice, enforce rules, stay at your post at all times, and handle special duties such as calls, messages and errands.
Competencies
- Essential: PSIRA knowledge; fire, emergency and health and safety training; strong English (reading, writing, speaking)
- Advantageous: A third language
Special Conditions of Employment
- PSIRA registered with Grade C accreditation
- South African citizen
- MIE check, with a clear criminal and credit record
- Driver’s licence, own reliable transport, and a PDP if deployed as a driver
